또 쉽게 볼 수 있었던 [New Girl]

 

오늘은 Season 2 - Episode 1 을 통해 배워보아요 :)

 

 

 

 

"Wrap one's head around something"

무엇을 이해하다, 이해하려고 노력하다

 

[ex]

"It took me a while to wrap my head around the concept of quantum physics."

나는 양자 물리학의 개념을 이해하는데 시간이 좀 걸렸어.

"I can't wrap my head around it."

이해 못 하겠어.

 

 

 

"Catch someone off guard"

누군가를 놀라게 하다, 예기치 못한 상황에 놓다

 

[ex]

"The unexpected question caught me off guard during the interview."

인터뷰 도중 예상치 못한 질문에 당황했어요.

"It was quite obvious that he was caught off guard."

그는 당황한 기색이 역력했어.

 

 

 

"Throw someone a bone"

누군가에게 작은 도움이나 혜택을 주다

 

[ex]

"I threw him a bone by letting him borrow my notes for the exam."

나는 시험을 위해 그에게 내 노트를 빌려줬어.

"Management threw a bone to employee to reach an agreement."

경영진은 같은 합의점에 도달하기 위해 직원 측에 조금 양보했다.

 

 

 

"Rain on someone's parade"

누군가의 기분을 상하게 하다, 기쁨을 깨뜨리다

 

[ex]

"I didn't mean to rain on your parade, but I have some bad news."

네 기분을 상하게 하고 싶지는 않은데, 나쁜 소식이 있어.

"Don't rain on somebody's parade."

다 된 밥에 재 뿌리지 마라.

 

 

 

"Get the ball rolling"

시작되도록 하다, 일의 진행을 시작하다

 

[ex]

"Let's get the ball rolling on planning the party."

파티 계획을 시작하자!

"Any ideas on how to get the ball rolling again?"

다시 협상을 시작할 방법 없을까요?

 

 

 

"Put all one's eggs in one basket"

모든 것을 하나의 일에 걸다, 위험을 감수하다

 

[ex]

"Investing all your money in one stock is like putting all your eggs in one basket."

주식 하나에 모든 돈을 투자하는 건 위험을 감수하겠다는 뜻이지.

"Do not venture all your egg's in on basket."

하나에 모든 것을 거는 모험은 하지 마라.

 

 

 

"Stick to one's guns"

자신의 주장이나 의견을 고수하다

 

[ex]

"Even under pressure, she stuck to her guns and defended her beliefs."

압박감 속에서도, 그녀는 자신의 신념을 고수하고 방어했다.

"Some teachers tend to stick to their guns on education."

몇몇 교사들은 그들의 교육관을 고집하는 경향이 있다.

 

 

 

"Fish for compliments"

칭찬을 기다리거나 얻으려고 노력하다

 

[ex]

"She always wears her new outfits to fish for comliments from her friends."

그녀는 항상 새로운 옷을 입어서 친구들로부터 칭찬을 듣고 싶어해.

"I'm not trying to fish for compliments, but do you like my new haircut?

칭찬들으려고 하는 말은 아닌데, 새로운 머리스타일 괜찮아?

 

 

 

"Spit it out"

무언가를 빨리 말하라고 요구하다

 

[ex]

"You're taking too long; just spit it out already!"

시간이 너무 오래 걸리는데, 얼른 말해!

"If you've got something to say, spit it out!"

할 말 있으면 해!

 

 

 

"Kick the can down the road"

문제를 미루다, 미래에 해결하도록 미뤄두다

 

[ex]

"They can't keep kicking the can down the road; they need to address the issue now."

그들은 더 이상 문제 해결을 미룰 수가 없어요, 지금 해결해야 해요.

"It's a solution that says let's kick the can down the road a little bit."

그 문제를 잠시 미뤄두자고 말한 것이 하나의 해결책이다.

 

 

 

"Paddle one's own canoe"

스스로 자신의 문제나 책임을 처리하다, 자립하다

 

[ex]

"Now that you're an adult, it's time to paddle your own canoe and take care of yourself."

이제 너도 어른이 되었으니, 자립해야 할 때야.

"You should paddle your own canoe now."

이제 너도 독립해야지.

 

 

 

"Get off on the wrong foot"

처음부터 시작을 잘못하다, 처음부터 악화되다

 

[ex]

"I think we got off on the wrong foot when we first met."

내 생각엔 우리가 처음 만났을 때 시작이 잘못된 것 같아.

"I don't wanna get off on the wrong foot."

나는 첫발부터 잘못 내딛고 싶지 않아.

 

 

 

"Throw a curveball"

예상치 못한 문제나 어려움을 만들다

 

[ex]

"The sudden change in plans really threw me a curveball."

갑작스러운 계획 변경으로 정말 예상치 못한 어려움이 생겼어요.

"Life gives you lemon sometimes, Life throws a curveball at you."

인생은 가끔 너를 힘들게 할 거야.

 

 

 

"Rub someone the wrong way"

누군가를 화나게 하거나 불편하게 만들다

 

[ex]

"His arrogant attitude really rubbed me the wrong way."

그의 오만한 태도는 나를 불편하게 만들었어.

"I don't know why, but her voive always rubs me the wrong way."

이뉴는 나도 모르겠지만, 그 여자 목소리를 들으면 화가 나.

 

 

 

"Keep a stiff upper lip"

어려운 상황에서 강하고 용감하게 행동하다

 

[ex]

"Even though she was going through a tough time, she kept a stiff upper lip and stayed strong."

그녀는 힘든 시기를 겪고 있었음에도 불구하고, 힘든 걸 내색하지 않았어요.

"With a title going back 300 years, the Earl of Onslow is impeccably qualified to keep a stiff upper lip."

300년 이상된 작위를 가진 온슬로우 백작은 당당할 자격이 완벽히 넘친다.
