참 많은 영국 드라마 중에서 재밌으면서도 가볍게,

또 쉽게 볼 수 있었던 [New Girl]

 

오늘은 Season 1 - Episode 5 를 통해 만나볼게요 :)

 

 

 

 

"Get a kick out of something"

~를 즐기다 / ~로 인한 흥분을 얻다.

 

[ex]

"I always get a kick out of watching comedy shows."

나는 항상 코미디쇼를 보면 기분이 좋아져.

"Issac got a kick out of teasing the highly embarrassable Ben."

Issac은 잘 당황하는 Ben을 놀리는 데에 재미가 들렸어.

 

 

 

"Go down the drain"

헛수고하다 / 물거품이 되다 / 못쓰게 되다 / 낭비하다.

 

[ex]

"All my hard work seems to be going down the drain."

내 모든 노력이 물거품이 된 것 같아.

"If anything goes wrong, all the work we've done may go down the drain."

까딱 잘못하면 모든 일이 수포로 돌아갈지도 몰라요.

 

 

 

"Jump through hoops"

(무엇을 성취하기 위해) 고생하다 / 엄청난 노력을 기울이다.

 

[ex]

"I had to jump through hoops to get that promotion."

나는 승진을 위해 많은 노력이 필요했어.

"Many cat owners have trained their pet cats to sit down, jump through hoops and roll over."

많은 고양이 주인들은 애완 고양이들을 앉고, 시키는 대로 하고, 구르도록 훈련시켰다.

 

 

 

"The ball is in somebody's court"

결정은 ~에게 달렸다 / ~이 결정권을 가지고 있다.

 

[ex]

"I've done my part. Now the ball is in your court."

내 역할은 다 했어. 이제 모든 건 너에게 달렸어.

"The ball is entirely in your court for the next two minutes."

앞으로 2분동안 결정권은 완전히 너에게 있어.

 

 

 

"In a pickle"

곤경에 처한 / 곤경에 빠진

 

[ex]

"I'm in a pickle. I accidentally locked my keys in the car."

곤경에 빠졌어요. 실수로 차에 열쇠를 둔 채로 차 문을 잠궜거든요.

"Noah is in a pickle after refusing to pay a speeding fine."

Noah는 속도 위반 벌금을 내지 않아서 곤경에 처했다.

 

 

 

"Screwed up"

망가뜨리다 / 망치다.

 

[ex]

"I really screwed up the presentation today."

오늘 발표를 정말 망쳤어요.

"You really screwed up there!"

네가 거기서 정말 망쳐버렸어!

 

 

 

"get (somebody) off the hook"

곤경(처벌)을 면하다(면하게 하다).

 

[ex]

"I couldn't get off the hook by myself."

나 혼자는 빠져나오지 못했을 거야.

"You just saying that to get off the hook?"

그저 곤경을 벗어나기 위해 그 말을 한 거니?

 

 

 

"Hit the books"

공부를 시작하다 / 교과서를 펼치다.

 

[ex]

"Final exams are coming up. Time to hit the books."

기말고사가 곧이야. 책 좀 볼 시간이야.

"Don't just watch to YouTube and hit the books."

유튜브만 보고있지 말고 공부 좀 해.

 

 

 

"Jump on the bandwagon"

대중의 성행에 따르다 / 유행을 따라가다.

 

[ex]

"After the success of the product, many companies jumped on the bandwagon."

제품이 성공하자, 많은 기업이 이에 동참했다.

"She's not the kind of person to jump on the bandwagon."

그녀는 유행만 따라가는 사람은 아니야.

 

 

 

"Out of the loop"

소식이 없는 / 정보를 받지 못한

 

[ex]

"I've been out of the loop since I went on vacation."

방학에 다녀온 이후로 아무런 소식도 듣지 못했어요.

"I guess I'm out of the loop."

나는 요즘 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 모르는 것 같아.

 

 

 

"Up in arms"

분노한 / 반대하는

 

[ex]

"The community is up in arms about the proposed construction project."

지역사회는 제안 받은 건설 프로젝트에 대해 반대했다.

"He is up in arms against the accusation."

그는 그 비난에 무척 분노했다.

 

 

 

"Bite the dust"

죽다 / 실패하다.

 

[ex]

"Thousands of small businesses bite the dust every year."

매년 수천 개의 중소기업들이 헛물만 켠다.

"We must cut expenses or the company will bite the dust."

비용을 줄이지 않으면 회사가 망할 거야.

 

 

 

"In hot water"

곤경에 처한 / 문제에 휘말린

 

[ex]

"He's in hot water after missing the deadline."

그는 마감기한을 놓쳐서 문제에 휘말렸다.

"Her behavior landed her husband in hot water."

그녀의 행동은 남편을 곤경에 빠트렸다.

 

 

 

"Walk on eggshells"

예민한 상황에 처하다 / 조심스럽게 행동하다.

 

[ex]

"I always have to walk on eggshells around my boss."

나는 상사가 주변에 있으면 항상 조심스럽게 행동해요.

"We're old friends here, so there's no need to walk on eggshells."

우린 오랜 친구 사이잖아, 눈치보지 마.

 

 

 

"In the doghouse"

(가정 내에서) 불리한 상황에 처한 / 면목을 잃어 / 사이가 서먹해져

 

[ex]

"After forgetting their anniversary, he's definitely in the doghouse."

그는 결혼기념일을 잊어버리고는 완전히 난처하게 되었다.

"He is in the doghouse with the boss."

그는 상사의 미움을 사고 있어요.
