참 많은 영국 드라마 중에서 재밌으면서도 가볍게,

또 쉽게 볼 수 있었던 [New Girl]

 

오늘은 Season 2 - Episode 2 을 통해 배워보아요 :)

 

 

 

 

"Nip it in the bud"

문제를 조기에 해결하다, 문제가 커지기 전에 막다

 

[ex]

"We need to nip this issue in the bud before it gets out of control."

이 문제에 대해 통제가 불가능해지기 전에 미연에 방지해야 한다.

"Nip it in the bud before it spreads."

일이 커지기 전에 싹을 잘라버려야 해요.

 

 

 

"Butt heads with someone"

누군가와 갈등하다, 불화하다

 

[ex]

"They often butt heads with each other over trivial matters."

그들은 사소한 문제로 갈등하게 되는 일이 빈번하더라고.

"I am sure his job is extremely exhausting much

of which he caused by trying to butt heads with everyone around him."

그의 직업이 주변의 모든 사람들과 갈등을 일으키게 함으로써 극도로 지치게 한다고 생각해요.

 

 

 

"Hit the jackpot"

대성공을 거두다, 대성공을 이루다

 

[ex]

"After years of hard work, he finally hit the jackpot and achieved his dreams."

수년간의 노력 끝에, 그는 마침내 대성공을 거두었고 꿈을 이루었다.

"He hit the jackpot in the stock market last year."

그는 작년에 주식으로 대박을 터뜨렸어.

 

 

 

"Give someone the slip"

누군가를 속이다, 피하다

 

[ex]

"The thief gave the police the slip by disappearing into the crowd."

도둑은 군중 속으로 사라져 경찰을 따돌렸다.

"I may be able to give him the slip but my legs can not run as fast as I would like."

내가 그를 따돌릴 수 있을지 모르지만 내 다리는 내가 원하는 만큼 빨리 달릴 수 없어. 

 

 

 

"Fish or cut bait"

태도를 분명히 하다, 어느 쪽인지 정하다

 

[ex]

"We can't keep delaying the decision; it's time to fish or cut bait."

우리는 결정을 계속 미룰 수 없어요, 이제 어느 쪽인지 정할 때에요.

"Mary is doing much better on the job since her manager told her to fish or cut bait."

Mary는 매니저에게서 할 것인지 아닌지 분명히 하라는 말을 듣고 난 후, 전보다 훨씬 더 일을 잘하고 있어.

 

 

 

"Hold your horses"

서두르지마, 재촉하지마, 기다려, 참아, 침착함을 유지해 (잠깐 생각을 먼저 해 봐)

 

[ex]

"Hold your horses! Let's think this through before making a decision."

서두르지 말고, 결정 내리기 전에 충분히 생각해 보자.

"Hold your horses! Let's focus on what needs to be done right now."

잠깐 진정하고, 지금 당장 해야 할 것에 집중하자.

 

 

 

"Jump ship"

(어려운 상황에서) 단념하고 떠나다

 

[ex]

"Many employees jumped ship when they heard about the company's financial troubles."

많은 직원들이 회사의 재정적 어려움에 대해 듣고 회사를 떠났어요.

"I wonder which one she'll jump ship for."

나는 그녀가 어디로 이적할지 궁금해.

 

 

 

"Make ends meet"

생활비를 간신히 충당하다, 수입과 지출을 맞추다

 

[ex]

"With the rising cost of living, it's becoming harder to make ends meet."

생활비가 오르면서, 생계를 유지하는게 점점 더 어려워지고 있어.

"The economy is bad these days, so it's hard to make ends meet."

요새 경제가 좋지 않아서 먹고살기 힘들어.

 

 

 

"Play hardball"

엄격하게 대하다, 강경한 태도를 취하다

 

[ex]

"The negotiations were tough; they really played hardball."

협상은 힘들었어요, 그들은 정말 강경하더라고요.

"I want us to play hardball on this issue."

저는 우리가 이 사안에 대해 강경한 태도를 취했으면 해요.

 

 

 

"Read the room"

상황을 파악하다, 분위기를 읽다

 

[ex]

"She failed to read the room and continued making jokes at an inappropriate time."

그녀는 분위기를 파악하지 못하고 적절하지 않은 때에 계속 농담을 했어요.

"Mason has no idea how to read the room; he says things at the worst time."

Mason은 영 분위기 파악할 줄을 몰라, 항상 최악의 타이밍에 말을 꺼내.

 

 

 

"Walk on air"

기뻐서 마치 하늘을 나는 듯한 기분이 들다

"After winning the competition, she felt like she was walking on air."

대회에서 우승한 후, 그녀는 너무 기뻐서 하늘을 나는 듯한 기분을 느꼈다.

"Jordan was well-known for having the ability to seemingly walk on thin air."

Jordan은 공중에서 걷는 것 같아 보이는 능력을 가진 것으로 유명하다.

 

 

 

"Break the ice"

얼음을 깨뜨리다, 사교적인 분위기를 만들다

"At the party, playing a game helped break the ice and start conversations."

파티에서 게임을 한 것이 어색함을 깨고 대화를 시작하는 데 도움이 되었어요.

"Teacher Oliver planned an activity to break the ice on the first day of class."

Oliver 선생님은 학기 첫 날에 어색한 분위기를 깰 활동을 계획하셨어요.

 

 

 

"Cook the books"

재무제표를 조작하다, 부정한 회계 행위를 하다

"The company was caught cooking the books to hide their losses."

그 회사는 손실을 숨기기 위해 재무제표를 조작하다가 적발됐죠.

"No longer can we cook the books and fudge the numbers."

더 이상 우리는 장부를 조작하고 숫자를 날조할 수 없어.

 

 

 

"Spill the beans"

비밀을 폭로하다, 무언가를 드러내다

"She accidentally spilled the beans about the surprise party."

그녀는 깜짝 파티에 대해 실수로 말해버렸어.

"It's a secret. Try no to spill the beans."

그건 비밀이야. 무심코 입을 놀리지 마.

 

 

 

"Throw a wrench in the works"

작업을 방해하다, 계획을 방해하다

 

[ex]

"The unexpected delay threw a wrench in the works of our project."

예상치 못한 지연으로 인해 우리 프로젝트 작업이 방해를 받았어요.

"I don't want to throw a wrench in the works, but have you checked your plans with a lawyer?"
