또 쉽게 볼 수 있었던 [New Girl]
오늘은 Season 1 - Episode 3 를 통해 살펴보아요 :)
"Hang in there."
견뎌라 / 버텨라.
[ex]
"Hang in there, you're almost done!"
조금만 더 기다려, 거의 다 끝났어!
"Hang in there, it will pass."
조금만 참아, 다 지나갈 거야.
"Hit the spot."
딱 맞다 / 정확히 맞다.
[ex]
"This hit the spot for me."
나한테 딱이었어.
"That bacon sandwich really hit the spot!"
베이컨 샌드위치는 바로 이 맛이지!
"Bite the bullet."
괴로운 일을 감내하다.
[ex]
"I know it's a hard work, but you have to bite the bullet and do it."
그게 힘든 일인 줄은 알지만 참고 해야 해.
"I had to bite the bullet and backed down on the demand."
나는 울며 겨자 먹기로 그 요구에 응했다.
"Get the ball rolling."
일을 시작하다.
[ex]
"Any ideas on how to get the ball rolling again?"
다시 협상을 시작할 방법이 없을까요?
"Once you get the ball rolling, you'll be great."
일단 일이 손에 익으면 아주 잘하실 거에요.
"Cut to the chase."
본론으로 들어가다.
[ex]
"Let's cut to the chase; we need a decision by Friday."
바로 본론으로 들어갑시다, 우린 금요일까지 결정을 내려야 해요.
"Let's cut to the chase and talk about the real problem here."
이제 본론으로 들어가서 진짜 문제에 대해 얘기해 봐요.
"Burn bridges."
절연하다 / (회복할 수 없을 정도로) 관계가 단절되다.
[ex]
"Even though we divorce, I don't want to burn bridges between us."
우리가 이혼하더라도, 연을 끊고 싶진 않아.
"You don't want to burn bridges with Harry."
해리와 원수가 될 필요는 없어.
"Under the weather."
몸이 안 좋다 / 아프다.
[ex]
"My wife is feeling a little under the weather now."
아내가 지금 몸 상태가 좀 안 좋아요.
"Morgan is feeling under the weather so will be absent today."
모건은 몸이 아파서 오늘 결근하려고 한다.
"Spill the beans."
비밀을 폭로하다 / (비밀을) 무심코 말해 버리다.
[ex]
"It's time you spill the beans about your new boyfriend."
이제 네 새 남자친구에 대해 털어놓을 때가 됐어.
"Someone spilled the beans about Amelie's surprise party."
누군가 아멜리에의 깜짝 파티에 대한 정보를 흘렸어.
"Jump the gun."
너무 서두르다 / 섣불리(성급하게) 행동하다.
[ex]
"I think we jumped the gun with that decision."
내 생각엔 우리가 너무 성급하게 결정한 것 같은데.
"I think we're jumping the gun by making plans."
우리가 너무 서둘러서 계획을 세우는 것 같아.
"Hit the nail on the head."
정확히 맞는 말을 하다. / 정곡을(핵심을) 찌르다.
[ex]
"His criticism hit the nail on the head."
그의 비판은 핵심을 찌른다.
"You really hit the nail on the head; that's exactly the issue."
내가 하려는 말이 바로 그거야, 바로 그게 문제라고.
"Cost an arm and a leg."
엄청난(큰) 돈이 들다.
[ex]
"These oranges cost an arm and a leg."
이 오렌지는 터무니없이 비싸요.
"The repairs cost an arm and a leg."
수리비가 엄청 많이 들었어.
"Back to square one."
처음부터 다시 시작하다.
[ex]
"After the problem occurred, we're back to square one."
문제가 발생한 후, 우리는 다시 원점으로 돌아갔다.
"If this doesn't work we're back to square one."
이 방법으로 해결되지 않으면 다시 원점으로 돌아가요.
"Spick and span."
아주 깔끔한 / 말끔한
[ex]
"His house is always spick and span."
그의 집은 언제나 아주 깔끔해.
"You look spick and span in that new suit!"
새 수트를 입으니 너 정말 말끔해 보인다!
"Get the hang of it."
익숙해지다 / 능숙해지다.
[ex]
"It's not difficult once you get the hang of it."
일단 이해만 하면 어렵지 않아.
"The work will become easier once you get the hang of it."
익숙해지면 일이 좀 수월해질 거야.
"Off the top of my head."
즉흥적으로 / 머리에서 떠올라서

"I can't think of the answer off the top of my head."
즉석에서 대답할 생각 없어.
"I can't remember Hyun's son's name off the top of my head."
현의 아들 이름이 금방 생각나지 않네.
"Raining cats and dogs."
비가 많이 오다.
[ex]
"They cancelled the baseball game because it was raining cats and dogs."
비가 억수 같이 쏟아져서 야구 경기가 취소되었어.
"It was raining cats and dogs last night."
어젯밤에 하늘에서 물을 퍼붓듯 비가 쏟아졌어.
"Cut corners."
대충하다 / 꼼수를 부리다 / (일을 쉽게 하려고) 절차를 무시하다 / (대충해서) 경비를 절감하다
[ex]
"I was in a rush to finish the project, so I had to cut some corners."
과제를 빨리 끝내기 위해 조금 대충해야 했어.
"You shouldn't cut corners if you want good quality."
좋은 품질을 원한다면 경비를 절약하면 안 되지.
"Spill your guts."
솔직하게 말하다, 가슴을 열다.
[ex]
"Just spill your guts to me."
그냥 나한테 솔직하게 다 말해봐.
"Sometimes it helps to spill your guts to a stranger."
때로는 낯선 사람에게 네 속을 털어놓는게 도움이 될 거야.
"On thin ice."
위험에 처한 / 민망한 상황에 있는

"After our fight, I am on thin ice with my girlfriend."
싸우고 나서, 여자친구와 사이가 좀 그래요.
"He felt as if he was stepping on thin ice."
그는 마치 살얼음을 밟는 기분이었다.
"Fish out of water."
자신 없는 / 어색한
[ex]
"He seemed to lack energe like a fish out of water."
그는 물 떠난 고기처럼 활기가 없어 보였어.
"When I first moved to NZ, I felt a fish out of water."
뉴질랜드에 처음 갔을 때, 어색하고 적응하기 힘들었어.
